Moto Morini 350 Kanguro X3

This week's 'Friday bike' is one that I came very close to buying, the Moto Morini 350 Kanguro X3.
This was one of the last trail bikes Morini built using their 350cc V twin engine. (There was also a 500cc 'Camel' version).
Back in about 1990 or 91 (can't remember now), I had to go to UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) for an Open University summer school. I rode down on my MZ ETZ 250, and things went well until I tried to change down a gear and found that the lever had fallen off! This was not an uncommon problem on MZ 250s due to the poorly machined splines on shaft and lever. (I had it happen twice, and some MZ owners used to attach a loop of wire round the lever to catch it if it came adrift).
What to do? I had planned on keeping riding in top gear until I got off the motorway, then stopping and change the bike down into 2nd using Mole grips (Vise grips), and riding through Manchester to the University. As I would be there for a week, I could phone my brother and get him to post me down another lever from my other 250. This would have worked had I not had to stop for fuel. After filling up I started the bike and put it onto 4th gear on its stand, then holding the clutch in I started to run with the bike aiming to leap on, slipping the clutch, like racers did in the 60s. This didn't quite work out as as soon as I got the clutch fully out and was riding onto the motorway, the clutch started slipping badly!
MZ 250s' clutches are fitted onto the end of the crankshaft by being pressed onto a taper - no splines, no keyway - nothing! This means that if it's given any sort of abuse, it slips off the taper and you don't have any drive. If you're really unlucky, it scores the taper so you end up needing a new crankshaft and clutch centre. It is possibly the worse piece of design I've ever seen and it's no wonder I've never come across any other bike with the same setup.
So it was onto the phone to the breakdown people and they took me to the next service station. There the people who own the garage with the breakdown trucks let me leave the bike inside until I could collect it, and I arranged with the breakdown people to relay me and the bike home the following week after the summer school.
I was still about 50 miles (80 km) from Manchester, so carrying my panniers, I got a taxi to the nearest railway station, then a train to Manchester.
I was really annoyed with the MZ and its stupid clutch design, and one evening I was walking past a bike shop where they were selling Morini Kanguros for £1200. It was heavily discounted as the model had been dropped from the range, and was a real bargain as an MZ ETZ 250 was about £1000 and a similar Japanese bike at least £2000.
Next day I went into the shop and asked if I could buy a Kanguro using my credit card! They said they could have the bike ready for me to ride away the following Saturday (when I was going home), then I asked if they could fit a set of Krauser pannier frames to it so I could carry my panniers. They looked in the Krauser catalogue, but no fitting kit was listed for the Kanguro. I offered to pay them to make a fitting kit - I'd made a fitting kit for the MZ, all it needed was four stips of steel bent and drilled to suit, a couple of hours work at the most, but they weren't interested. When I said that I'd only buy the bike if they could fit the pannier frames, and I was willing to pay them to do it, they still wouldn't budge, so I didn't buy the Morini!
My plan had been to ride back to where the MZ was on the Morini and tell the people looking after it to throw it in a skip! I was so disappointed with it that I didn't even want it back.
In the end I got a train, taxi, and breakdown truck and got home at about 2 in the morning. I fitted a new gear lever and rode the bike for a least the next 10 years!
A couple of years ago when I was looking for a project, I started looking around for a Kanguro. All the ones I could find were either wrecks or ridiculously over priced (or even both!). So I ended up buying my CL350 instead.
I've often wondered what a Kanguro would have been like. As it is, I've still not owned an Italian bike (my Italian built Yamaha doesn't count), and my CL 350 is the nearest to a trail bike I've ever had. Anyone out got or have ridden a Kanguro?

Harley graveyard

Found these sad pictures on the Web.

These Harley-Davidsons were formarly used by the Traffic Police of Peru Policía de Tránsito del Perú, and just seemed to have been dumped at the end of their lives. You'd think they would sell them on as 'projects' to try and recoup some of the cost.
At least one bike has been saved and restored.

Blast from the Past – Part 1.

I was idly looking round the Internet when I found this pair of beauties:

A pair of 'Eurodesign' panniers from the mid 70s. I bought a pair of these in 1979 (probably from John Brown Wheels – remember the adverts in bike magazines?) and used them on my Yamaha SR500. They were very popular at the time and were made of what was laughingly termed 'leatherette', but was really cardboard covered in thin vinyl. They had aluminium backs to to stiffen then and attached to tubular racks with some really cheap (and short lived) plastic straps.

This particular pair must be at least 35 years old and although they look a bit tatty, this is what they looked like after about 3 months use. They were incredibly cheaply made, and that 'lock', which must have cost about 5p, could be opened with a bit of bent wire.

At the time I thought these were the greatest thing ever and had transformed my bike into the 'ultimate touring machine', but they soon leaked, straps broke, and holes appeared in the lower face (repaired with bits of old flooring tiles). I lent mine to my brother Stuart, and they were stolen from his Suzuki GT500 when he was on holiday in Ireland.

Plans for 2014

I know it's already February, but I've been waiting for a couple of things to come together before I wrote about my future plans.

Firstly, I'm starting a new job tomorrow! This will (hopefully) be my first full time, permanent job for about 18 months, and hopefully they might even pay my wages!

It's as a Field Service Technician for a company supplying equipment in the healthcare field. I worked in this area for 12 years, so it's a return to a familiar field. Getting this job has taken a great weight off of me as I felt that my life was 'on hold' for the last 18 months, and now I can start planning more for the future.

Also, next month should see the end of the mortgage on my house and I'll now own it outright. When you take out a mortgage, the idea that one day in the future it'll be paid off and you'll not have to pay any more almost seems like an abstract concept. In my case it's been 22 years, but it's almost over. Can't pretend that it's not tinged with sadness as we'd bought the house just before getting married, and I would never have thought that by the time it was paid off I would be on my own.

Looking back at my 'Plans for 2013' post, it looks like I managed about half of the things I'd planned (buying a car, going on holiday on the bike, going running again), and about half will be carried forward to this year (getting a job, getting more work done on my bikes). The running has fallen away a bit due to the weather – I don't mind running I the cold and wet, but when it's so cold and wet that the rain 'stings', then it's hard to get motivated!

I also did a bit of hillwalking last year during periods of unemployment, and this is something that I'll try and keep up this year. I'm also going to try and get out for weekend runs on the bikes more often as (hopefully) I won't be too worried about money. (Buying petrol for the bike is one of the first things to go when you're unemployed).

When I bought my first flat back in 1986 I couldn't afford to go on holiday that summer. I was also going through a 'fitness phase', so for two weeks I got up early, went swimming at my local pool in the morning, rode my BMW R75/6 for an hour or so, and climbed at least one 'Munro' (mountain over 3000 feet/914 metres) that afternoon. I put my climbing clothes into the panniers and changed behind bushes at the side of the road. I don't think I could ever get back to that level of fitness again!

Last week I went see folk singer Seth Lakeman with a couple of friends. This was the first concert I'd been to for at least 6 or 7 years, I really enjoyed it, and plan to go to more events this year.

One idea I had was to go to a folk music festival whilst on holiday and had thought about the famous Fairport Cropredy Convention If I rode to the festival for the weekend, then it's an easy ride to the Channel ports for a ferry to France and could spend a week or so there. However, a few weeks later, and in the same part of the country is the Towersey Festival, which I feel has a better lineup (Seth Lakeman, Richard Thompson, etc), and being at the end of August is just after the 'holiday season' in France, so roads and accommodation should be quieter.

On the bikes front, things are pretty much as described in my previous post. As I get a van with the new job, I won't need the white Traveller as a 'commuting bike', so it can stay in 'storage' and I'll concentrate on the CL 350.

It WILL look this good one day!

When the job situation was looking uncertain last month, I thought about ways I could work for myself. One I thought about was making kits to fit spotlights and hazard lights onto bikes and selling them through Ebay. I bought in a stock of parts and had just finished making my first batch when I was told I had got my new job. These will be on sale soon (along with pannier reflector kits) so 'watch this space'. When/if the first batch are sold, I'll have a think about how much time it takes up and how much money I make to see if it's worth my time doing any more. It might be a handy extra source of income, and as long as it doesn't take up too much time I might continue with 'my business'. I used that phrase solely as an excuse to show this:

So that's my plans for the coming year. Bear in mind that all, some, or none of the above might happen!!!
